NIIOC: Organ Serenades & world premiere (Belfast, UK)
This concert features the world premiere performance of Roxanna Panufnik’s Agnus Dei cum jubilo, commissioned by NIIOC with funding from the Arts Council of Northern Ireland’s National Lottery Programme.
Free entry with retiring collection
Richard Yarr MBE DL, Chairman of NIIOC, said: ‘Andrew was the winner of our competition in 2014, and the St Alban’s International Organ Festival is our partner festival, so this performance will tie some of our connections together nicely. It’s a very exciting moment for us to premiere our second commission, by another wonderful woman composer, following Where the Birds Sing by Grace-Evangeline Mason, commissioned for our tenth anniversary in 2022 by the Commission for Victims and Survivors and premiered by our 2013 competition winner Richard Gowers.
Roxanna Panufnik will be present at the Belfast recital, which is part of First Church’s Music in May series and will be given on the church’s highly regarded Lewis organ. Commenting on the commission, the composer said: ‘Ever since composing Kyrie cum Jubilo 13 years ago, I’ve longed to complete a mass for solo organ. I’m so excited and grateful to Richard Yarr and NIIOC and organist Andrew Forbes, who have enabled me to complete my mass, starting in Belfast in May and finishing in Glasgow in September.’
‘Each movement of the Mass is based on a plainsong melody from a 12th-century Mass “In solemnities and feasts of the Blessed Virgin Mary”, also known as “Cum jubilo”. In the Agnus Dei, sometimes the plainsong is implied as the top line of shifting harmonies or it becomes a high, “celestial” accompaniment to something else. There are references to the other movements in my Mass (although I’ve yet to compose the Sanctus & Benedictus!) especially in the last “have mercy on us”, where the scalic passages of my Kyrie Cum Jubilo take on modes from Japan, India, Turkey and Greece to form a global quest for mercy and then peace.’

Sowne of Organe: St Margaret's Knightswood (Glasgow, UK)
Join Sowne of Organe and Glasgow Society of Organists for this free afternoon event profiling the endangered 1865 Father Willis organ at St Margaret’s Church in Knightswood, Glasgow. With the church having been closed by the Church of Scotland, there are two masterpieces in peril: the historic pipe organ and the exceptional building itself.
Famed Scottish architect Sir Robert Lorimer designed St Margaret’s Church, and it became the last church in Scotland to be built wholly of stone. This significant listed building is home to an equally important pipe organ, which was the first commission for a Scottish church by the leading Victorian organ builder, Henry ‘Father’ Willis.
The organ has already outlived homelessness once before, when its original church – Townhead Parish Church – was closed and subsequently demolished. In this joint event between Sowne & GSO, come and hear the instrument played by Chris Bragg, Andrew Forbes, Eilidh Harris and Steven McIntyre; learn about its remarkable survival; and help us fight for the future of two precious masterpieces.

Aesop Ensemble (Helensburgh, UK)

They present a programme of specially arranged music with a sea-faring theme (including Stanford’s well-known ‘Songs of the Sea’) which was originally put together for the Tall Ships Festival in Aberdeen.

Glasgow Barons Early Music Festival: Magical Instruments (Glasgow, UK)
The pipe organ of Govan Old Parish Church sits between two radically different musical styles, a dialogue captured in this late-night performance of kaledioscopic music by Pachelbel, Sweelinck, Buxtehude and Bach, featuring specially curated editions from the early 20th Century.
Originally built in 1888, this historic instrument underwent a major redesign just before the Second World War—the period when rich symphonic textures gave way to an era characterised instead by brightness and clarity. Blending these new ideals with the dazzling gestures and profound rhetoric of the Baroque organ tradition, editions by Karl Straube and Frederick Bridge showcase the Govan Old organ in this vibrant interpretation of historic masterpieces.
